victoria's promo material

Here they are:)  They may not look like much but I spent a whole day hand sewing these bad boys.  While constructing them, I thought of their forms in terms of Illustrator, breaking them into their most basic shapes.  My amateur sewing skills did not lend themselves to the human characters of Jack and the King, but I made a nice little band of villains.  Back at school, I am going to use fabric paint to achieve some of the finer details I could not achieve with fabric.  I think they have a lot more character in person, and I think it will be fun to play around with setting them up in different ways for the presentation gala.

Promotional Poster Finished

I completed what few changes I wanted to make to the title. Then, after viewing the prof's suggestions, I incorporated those as well.

Promotional Poster

It's like 99.85% complete. The title needs a bit of work. I took Ana's design from here, but the transition from small png to Illustrator wasn't very crisp, so I had to fudge it.

Pieces coming together

So with Milestone 3 (a.k.a. the beta of our game) coming up very soon, everything is finally falling into place. For a while we coders have been working separately on our individual parts, and using sample art for many things. Now we're starting to implement one another's changes and ideas into a cohesive project. We're finally using our many art assets, and implementing the final bits of game mechanics, including the equipment. After this, we'll be putting the finishing polish on the game mechanics, menus, and level designs. We're very excited to say we are pretty close to having something one could call a finished game.

Victoria's Promotional Designs

In class, I mentioned creating plush figures, drawing my inspiration from some super cute Pokemon plushies:

Since I am creating the stuffed animals while at home on break, I will not have a physical example until December.  However, I will do my best to illustrate my vision here.

The Master of Nunn plushies will be constructed out of simple shapes (like the Snorlax above) but will have more detail than just printing a sprite's front image on fabric and a sprite's back image on fabric and sewing the two together into a potato sack.

I definitely will create plushies of the main character of Jack and all of the bosses (the Knight, the Mage, the King, and Nunn) and I think, time sparing, making stuffed animals of Mavis the llama and some of the enemy animals would be super cute too.

I will make my own patterns by adapting free patterns and tutorials found online:

Imagine one of these dragons as indigo and a lot cooler looking and you'll have an idea of what the Nunn plushie might be.

I have basic sewing skills and my mom's pretty handy with needle and thread so at least I'll have a decent reference.  I plan on using fun varieties of fabrics (but most likely primarily felts) to match the eclectic, unique style of our game:)

Updated Promotional Image

After taking several criticisms into account from yesterday, I've changed the promo image. Hope it looks better.

Castle Knights

Above are some knight variations I made as potential enemies in the castle level.  These knights protect the evil king and need to be taken down!

More stuff

I thought we might needed a chest opening maybe after Jack beat a boss and the new weapon or item you get as a reward coming out of it. I also added other things to throw.

FLoating fire, why not? Could be an enemy or something!

Finished Cutscenes

I fixed the King from last time; his face just looked strange to me. I've also listed what they should say below.

King: I'm in no mood for jokes today, jester. You know nothing of a King's burden.

Jack: Oh, don't worry, your majesty. This performance will be special. I assure you, you'll never feel the burden of being king again.

King Cutscene Image

Mage Walking animation

Mage moving and attack animation for his staff is the mouth opening.

Another Jack Throwing Motion and Final Two Cutscene Images

I intend to get them all running as a throwing animation soon. As for the cutscenes, these will be the last two, at least by the due date of Wednesday. Any other scenes will have to be done via the sprites.

Post-Milestone 2 update

So, we gave our presentation for Milestone 2 and showed off our trailer and gameplay.  I think it went well; we seemed to have more than the average group, and some of the class seemed to be impressed. The next step, then, is polishing up what we have.

Our game engine is about 90% complete, with the foundation for basic level/screen progression, collision detection, enemy and projectile movements, and the like. What hasn't been done yet is an easy enough addition. From here, we need to get and implement more sprites, particularly for the backgrounds, and edit the design of the levels to have a more natural difficulty curve. We're also working on putting in cutscenes and fleshing out the menus.

Forrest Looping Levels

I went back and edited the forrest levels, giving them a few tufts of grass and some stones on the path to create texture and dimension.  Also, you'll see at the top the looping levels round off into the knight's camp.  Is this an acceptable way to end the level and commence the boss battle?  I fugue this tent/camp scene could be the last background of the level and the knight could be waiting there.

More Mage Cave Variations

Here is another background to loop in the mage level.  Anna addressed the issue of lack of color variation by creating these crystals.  I included a final background scene for this level as well: the Mage's cauldron and a stack of books surrounded by a cluster of crystals.

More stuff

Bone pit/lava pit for mage level that you have to jump over.

Ponds that Jack has to jump over or avoid in the forest level.

Blue, Red, Yellow and Black. Magic books for mage level. These books can float and shoot stuff from their pages, which have the animation of their pages moving as they attack!

A yellow beam that one of the enemies or a boss has that Jack needs to avoid.
